Places Of Worship: Christ Church Highbury

Fellowship, encouragement and the strengthening of our relationship with the Lord and our brothers and sisters in Christ are a huge part of the Christian faith. Hebrews 10: 24-25 reminds us: “And let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

Away from your usual area and worship habits, it’s easy to feel unsure about where to go on a Sunday. We’re very fortunate at the Highbury Centre to be within easy reach of a number of welcoming and vibrant churches. While our guests are staying with us, we want them to feel at home, and part of that is helping them to find local places of worship.

This month, we’re focusing on the parish church of Christ Church Highbury. Like us, they are housed in an imposing Victorian building and like us, they believe in reaching out to their community. Their mission statement is “roots down, branches out” which accords with our own ethos here at the Highbury Centre. There are three Sunday services which aim to suit all age groups. The 9.00 is a quiet and reflective service following the modern prayer book. A creche is available for younger members of the congregation. The 11.00 service is more lively and informal with a baby and toddler creche, plus Junior Church Groups for older children. Communion is shared on the first and third Sundays, with Baptisms on the fourth.

The evening service starts at 6.30 and follows a monthly rota. The first Sunday is a reflective time of prayer and discussion, the second Sunday is Communion, the third Christian Meditation and the fourth, Jazz Vespers with coffee beforehand from 6.00.

Christ Church welcomes visitors with open arms and is a warm and welcoming space where you can meet new brothers and sisters in Christ and worship the Lord. The church is within easy walking distance of the Highbury Centre, located at 155 Highbury Grove N5 1SA. Walk up Aberdeen Park, cross the road and turn right up Highbury Grove and you’ll see the church to the right of Highbury Fields.
